On July 12, 1978, a frontier town witnessed an event that harkened back its Wild West heritage.
Originally a frontier mining town, Rock Springs, Wyoming was once home to bank robbers, cattle rustlers and prostitutes. On July 12, 1978, its rough-and-tumble history came roaring back to life with a scene that could have been lifted from Wild West lore.
On that day, the no-nonsense police chief, Ed Cantrell, killed one of his officers in a frontier-style shootout. CITY CONFIDENTIALTM shows why tension between Cantrell and officer Michael Rosa finally boiled over into tragedy, and what happened afterwards. Cantrell's supporters claim that Rosa had become involved in the drug scene that he was charged with cleaning up, and had attacked the chief in a drugged and drunken rage. But others--including the prosecutors assigned to the case--contended that Cantrell had killed Rosa to keep him from testifying about corruption in the department.
Go inside the controversial case that seemed for all the world like a bad dream from the past.
