The iconic catalog, the legendary headquarters and more--here is the story of America's most famous store.
- The hundred-year history of an American legend.
- Includes interviews with corporate executives and heirs to the Sears fortune.
- Trace the development of the brand, the stores and the company through the decades.
It started with one man and a box of pocket watches. It became one of the greatest commercial successes of American history.
The Sears story began in Redwood, Minnesota in 1886, where 22-year-old Richard Sears worked as a railroad agent. Any item that passed through town first passed through him. So when a package of pocket watches was refused by a store owner, Sears bought them--and turned them into a $5,000 profit! The next year, Sears moved to Chicago and went into partnership with watchmaker Alvah Roebuck. By 1893 the Sears, Roebuck and Company had gone beyond watches with a mail order catalog featuring silverware, rings, sewing machines, harnesses, bicycles and even revolvers. The Sears, Roebuck catalog homogenized America, providing country folk with items once reserved for city folk--at affordable prices.
From the heyday of the catalog and the construction of the Sears Tower to the company's struggles to adjust to new competitors, BIOGRAPHY® draws on company insiders and industry experts to tell the Sears story.
