Expert Review:
Not as well known as it deserves to be, director David Miller’s “Sudden Fear” is an outstanding example of noir at its best – chiaroscuro lighting, angst, alienation, and a triangle of betrayal (Joan Crawford, Jack Palance and Gloria Grahame). The film was nominated for four Academy Awards: lead actress, supporting actor, b&w cinematography (by Charles Lang) and b&w costume design. Melodramatic, yes, but also tense, swiftly paced and satisfying. By Jacqueline Fitzgerald of Film Noir Blonde
