5 Timeless Suspense Thrillers

The Asphalt Jungle
Director John Huston explores a feverish plot for the big score and how it unravels. With Sterling Hayden and the emergent Marilyn Monroe.

Gun Crazy
A searing forerunner to Bonnie and Clyde: Peggy Cummins and John Dall are dead-bang goners for each other as they go where the money is.
Expert Review: In noir romance, red flags go unheeded and wake-up calls are ignored. An unforgettable example is Joseph H. Lewis’ “Gun Crazy” in which John Dall falls for Peggy Cummins, a bold and blood-chilling blonde. They decide to feather their nest by robbing banks. Lewis took risks thematically (depicting lovers on the lam) and stylistically (the famous one-take getaway shot). The film influenced French New Wave directors and 1967’s “Bonnie and Clyde” by Arthur Penn. By Jacqueline Fitzgerald of Film Noir Blonde

Murder, My Sweet
Wit and trend setting style to burn! As Raymond Chandler's sleuth Phillip Marlowe, Dick Powell sets out to find a missing moll named Velma.
Expert Review: A superb, essential noir, thanks to Edward Dmytryk’s lively direction, top-notch acting and a terrific script (based on Raymond Chandler’s novel “Farewell, My Lovely”). Musical star Dick Powell took a gamble by playing private eye Philip Marlowe and the risk paid off. Tracking down a showgirl for an ex-con ignites the action in a complicated plot. There are Chandlerian weirdos, well dressed hustlers and eloquent thieves galore. Also starring Claire Trevor, Anne Shirley, Mike Mazurki, Esther Howard and Otto Kruger. Out of the Past
A troubled P.I. (Robert Mitchum), a drop-dead beauty (Jane Greer) and a moneyed mobster (Kirk Douglas) are a trio to reckon with in arguably the definitive noir.
Expert Review: “Out of the Past” is director Jacques Tourneur’s noir masterpiece. He and director of photography Nicholas Musuraca create gorgeous, poetic images that captivate from the first shot to the last. Robert Mitchum tries to leave his past behind him and start a new life in a small town. But seductive Jane Greer and gangster Kirk Douglas still have a hold on him. Mitchum, at his most vulnerable, narrates via voiceover-flashback to good girl Virginia Huston. By Jacqueline Fitzgerald of Film Noir Blonde

The Set-Up
A world-weary fighter who feels he's just a punch away from bigger paydays is told to take a dive. Noir icons Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter K.O. boxing's palooka world.
