John Ford’s The Searchers is the perfect classic/revisionist blend, with a masterful John Wayne as antihero. Comanches have murdered Ethan Edward’s brother’s family and abducted his niece, but the hero-will-save-the-girl plot explores the corrosiveness of loneliness, anger, and racism—the dark side of westerns—as troubled Ethan follows the tribe to save his niece . . . or kill her.
