America’s twenty-sixth President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), embodied the national spirit of daring exploits, thoughtful intelligence, and enduring accomplishments. Wielder of the Big Stick, member of the Rough Riders and builder of the Panama Canal, “Teddy” Roosevelt was also an avid conservationist, a prolific writer, and a zealous advocate of the “strenuous life.”
Gleb Derujinsky was born into the aristocratic golden age of late 19th Century Russia and immigrated to New York the year Roosevelt died, 1919. Derujinsky’s classical and religious sculptures quickly gained critical acclaim, and over the next fifty-six years he won a series of Gold Medals, art exhibitions, and important commissions. The Theodore Roosevelt Bust was completed in 1920 to grace the memorial reconstruction of Roosevelt’s birthplace. The New York City home where Roosevelt lived until he was 14 years old is now the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site, containing five period rooms, two museum galleries and a bookstore.
Caring for Your Artwork
We have combined a high-density stone with a catalyst to create this statue. The result is a durable statue that stands up to the ravages of time. Centuries-old casting techniques still apply. Artisans apply the patina in a labor-intensive process that requires several layers and specialized shading, all done by hand.
