The RMS Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world when she set off on her maiden voyage from Southampton England, to New York City on April 10, 1912 with 2,223 people on board. Four days into the crossing, at 23:40 on April 14, 1912, she struck an iceberg and sank at 2:20 the following morning, resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people. This is one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. The high casualty rate was due in part to the fact that the ship only carried enough lifeboats for 1,178 people.

Among the survivors was nine week old Millvina Dean, her mother and brother; they would survive on Lifeboat 10. The three surviving members of the Dean family went on to live long healthy lives; Dean's mother passed away at age 96, her brother passed at age 80, and Millvina, who was last living survivor of the Titanic, passed away on May 31, 2009 at the age of 97. This photograph is personally signed by Millvina.
