In 1834, members of William Lloyd Garrison's Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society, including African American and white individuals, used Christmas to expose the hypocrisy of a nation that claimed liberty while enslaving millions. Women played a leading role in organizing Christmas bazaars to finance the abolitionist cause and spread anti-slavery messages in the name of peace and emancipation.
