Early in 1942, World War II was not going well for America. A technologically obsolete and depleted navy was trying desperately to fight in two oceans while waiting for the spoils of the nation's industrial might to start delivering the new generation of ships that would help turn the tide of battle. In January, German submarines--U-boats--began a concentrated assault against East Coast shipping. American anti-submarine defenses were almost non-existent, and the U-boats had a field day, sinking hundreds of cargo ships, often within sight of shore. This initial U-boat assault, known as Operation Paukenschlag (Drumbeat), ultimately proved to be the Germans' greatest submarine success of World War II.

But in the midst of these triumphs, one German submarine, U-352, gave up virtually without a fight. DEEP SEA DETECTIVES heads from the ocean floor to the home of survivor Heinz Richter to explore the strange circumstances surrounding the surrender, shedding light on an unlikely early triumph for America in the Atlantic war.
