On January 17, 1955, Commander Eugene P. Wilkinson signaled this historic message from the USS Nautilus: “Underway on nuclear power.” The USS Nautilus was the world’s first nuclear submarine and became the world’s most famous submarine, setting many endurance records for submerged operations (she could stay underwater for weeks at a time) and, in 1958, navigating under the North Pole.
Photograph is personally signed by Eugene P. Wilkinson, her first commanding officer.
