Paul Newman earned his sixth Academy Award nomination for his role as an alcoholic attorney out for redemption in "The Verdict" (1982). Newman's ambulance-chasing lawyer unexpectedly rejects a generous out-of-court settlement and takes a high-profile malpractice case to trial, despite the unlimited resources of James Mason's lawyer for the other side. The film also earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Mason for Best Supporting Actor, Sidney Lumet for Best Director and playwright David Mamet for Best Adapted Screenplay.
