A half century ago, before there was a John Wayne Gacy, before there was a Richard Speck, Chicago had William Heirens, also known as "the lipstick killer."

It was the crime of the century in postwar Chicago. In 1946, two women and a six-year-old girl were found murdered, and the case was front-page news for months. Banner headlines announced the capture of William Heirens, who eventually confessed and was sentenced to three life terms.

But there is ample reason to believe that Heirens was not the killer. As his lawyer says, "the public was furious with these murders and demanded that somebody pay. And the system served Bill up on a platter." AMERICAN JUSTICE® analyzes the evidence and speaks with many of the key figures in the case. And in a remarkable jailhouse interview, Heirens talks about what he has accomplished behind bars--he was the first inmate ever to earn a college degree in Illinois and has become one of the most accomplished prisoners in the state's history.

Long before John Wayne Gacy and Richard Speck, Chicago was galvanized by the Lipstick Killer--but was William Hereins really the culprit?
