After eight years, it's comforting to know that some things never change. As the polymorphous-perverse socialite Karen (Megan Mullally) observes at one point in Will and Grace's bittersweet, and ultimately heartwarming finale, "Will's mean, Grace is flat-chested, Jackie's pretending like he's following this, and I'm high from something I found under the sink in your bathroom." But changes are in store for the lifelong best friends. Will (Eric McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing) have not spoken in two years, following her decision to reconcile with her ex-husband (Harry Connick Jr.). Both have gone on to start new lives and families -- a daughter for Grace, a son for Will and his life partner, Vince (Bobby Cannavale). Meanwhile, in classic sitcom tradition, Karen and Jack (Sean Hayes), the series' indispensable second bananas, scheme to reconcile the estranged pair. As the hour unfolds, some chapters close and others open, lost friendships are found, and destiny manifests itself in one of television's great meet-cutes some 20 years down the road. More interested in pratfalls and punch lines than preaching, Will and Grace fabulously succeeded where the pioneering Ellen failed, earning unprecedented mainstream acceptance for a gay-themed comedy. True to form, Will and Grace bids farewell by staying true to its subversively funny muse, as witness the return of diminutive Beverley Leslie (Leslie Jordan), bent on making Jack his kept man.

For a series that lived (and some critics say, died) on A-list guest stars, the finale offers only Kevin Bacon, who appears in Grace's nightmare vision of a future with Will. Better, we get Shelley Morrison as Rosario, still trading profanities and put-downs with Karen, who, in a twist of fate, becomes penniless. Jack and Karen, as ever, supply the hour's biggest laughs, but near the wind-up, they are given a lovely swan song. To quote the classic lyric, this finale is "Unforgettable" in every way.
